Brachymetatarsia

Typically occurring in both feet, brachymetatarsia is a condition characterized by a short metatarsal, most commonly the 4th. Metatrasals are the long bones behind the toes.  The foot has five metatarsals and this condition results in one shortened toe, again most commonly the 4th.  The causes of brachymetatarsia are most often genetic or traumatic,  meaning that you can be born with it or it can be induced by premature closure in the metatarsal growth plate due to a trauma.

If you have a markedly shortened 4th toe then you likely have brachymetatarsia,   This condition can be managed with custom orthotics.  In order to correct or cure this problem, surgery would be necessary.  If the condition is not symptomatic, then surgery is a personal choice and can improve the appearance of the affected foot.

If you are concerned about a shortened toe,  Dr. Foucher can help you find the right treatment option for you based on your unique situation. Contact us today to set up an appointment.
