A bunion is a progressive deformity that starts as an enlargement at the base of the big toe and causes the the big toe to lean towards the smaller toes. An X-ray is necessary to properly evaluate a bunion deformity and plan treatment. 

Bunions generally present with pain at the base of the great toe with possible swelling and redness. A visible "bump" is common. 

Bunions may be hereditary but ill fitting shoes often play a role..
